Is it art that I'm making?

I am working a lot on finding the right way to express myself artistically. At the same time I am just training my drawing skills. There are so many possibilities and I like to experiment with media and tools, just playing. But I often feel that it is not the right thing I am doing. It is not art that I am making, just drawings and paintings not worked through thoroughly, without a deeper meaning.
Maybe I just have to give art the time it deserves?

Then of course I have other things to do, important also, like finishing my education. That is why I do not paint all the time, just a quick sketch here and there. Yesterday my paintbrush called for me, so I just had to use it for yet another experiment.

And this morning as a warm up for the day, I worked on this painting of a woman lying down. I found her picture on the blog: http://womenpaintingwomen.blogspot.de

I covered the sketchbook page with acrylic and started sketching with a pastel, bye and bye adding graphite water color pencil, more pastel, acrylic and pastel... At times I thought it would become a total mess, but at this stage I like the abstract expression of the painting.

What do you think?

As the above painting was not really finished, I worked on a bit. Still something to do, I think.

The last Photo is a sketch of some tiny owls, they made me smile big, when I saw them. Maybe they will be integrated in my story with Rugana on her mission?

Wish you all a happy PPF and a weekend as you'd like to have it - joyful, relaxed, quiet or full of people.

Music

I have to share this one with you all, who love music.
It is a clip with Hillary Hahn playing Bach and Charles Ives.
Actually the last part with Charles Ives is the one I liked most.
She played some tunes accompanying herself.

Portrait-sketchbook

I'm going to fill up a whole sketchbook with faces. I have started to prepare the first few pages with acrylic. The book's size is: 13,3 x 13,3 cm.

On the left page (above) I have drawn a sketch of a woman after an art-photo on
Ritva Sillanmäki's blog. This is, how it looks:

It is done very quickly, I just captured the main shadow and light with a charcoal on the acrylic background. The matte coal on the shimmering acrylic is very special. I guess it doesn't show too well on the photo.

Stilllife

fruity painting - mixed media, starting with pastels light grey and dark red

adding brown and orange

Here Chopin played his role: the ink scribbles in the background were done to the tones of serenade Nr. 10, and some water-soluble graphite gave some dimension, to the left dry, to the right wet.

Silver and gold markers were used to highlight some spots.

Adding some ink doodles all over the painting, and finished!

I share this on PPF, have a look at all the other artists, sharing their work!

Portraits - Work in progress...

I have been working with portraits again this week, here are some examples:

After: Raffaello Sanzio - Ritratto di donna (ca. 1518-1520)

Actress

Musician

Artist and blogger

girl

A Picasso painting of a young girl was the source of inspiration for this portrait.

And this girl had so much expression on her face, not sure I do her due?

Sketching from black to portrait

I drew and smeared black chalk on my sketchbook:

Then I took my eraser and remove the black wherever necessary to make a portrait.

Eggplant

I think I'll have to reveal the source for this painting :-)

I participate in a challenge on: http://paintanddrawtogether.blogspot.de

The painting we were asked to paint is from Henri-Horace Ronald Delaporte (1724/1725 - 1793) and it is called "Egg Basket". When I get a "task" I often get a lot of ideas for how to do it. So I was at once thinking of a painting in large dimensions, 1x1,5m or something like that in a completely different colour-scheme than the original - a modern interpretation, or something using pastels. As I don't have time for doing big things at the moment, I said to myself: think small. And then the photo of this plant came to my mind. The colours in the photo harmonized very well with the "Egg Basket" - this way the idea for my painting was born.

The Lacemaker

Jan Vermeer has painted this girl working on a board making lace of fine threads.
The blog "Paint And Draw Together" has put up a challenge: to paint this picture in any technique one may prefer to chose.

Having little time left, today is the final day to send in the picture, I chose to make a sketch in my sketchbook. I added a layer of acrylic, which makes the paper more sturdy and much more important the acrylic gives a pencil drawing a lot of expression. It supports the pencil very well.

It is certainly not a perfect sketch, I could use hours and hours on the picture, but time is running and
today is hopefully the first day for me to participate in the PADT.

Some more details were added to the drawing tonight:

More photos will follow :-)

The composition went out of hand, I certainly should have made an overall sketch,
before going into detail.
